Minimum wage “SMIC”

The SMIC (Salaire Minimum Interprofessionnel de Croissance) is the French minimum hourly wage.

It is based on the cost of living. And it is updated every year on the 1st of January.

This minimum wage applies to all employees working in the French metropolitan area, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon and the overseas departments.

The comparison between the paid gross salary and the minimum wage is to be done on a monthly basis.

The paid gross salary to consider includes the salary, the benefits in kind and all payments considered as a salary complements. It doesn’t include the expenses reimbursements, the legal overtime payments and transport benefits. It also excludes the legal incentives and participations payments.

The SMIC can differ for employees based on their age. Also employees working with a professional training contract or an apprentice contract can have lower minimum wages.
